Top and Front-Load Washer Repair in Sacramento
One call gets you a local repair company that works on your washer's brand, so a drum full of wet laundry doesn't become a weekend project.
Sacramento Appliance Care connects households in Sacramento, Roseville and the surrounding Placer and Yolo County suburbs with local companies that handle washer repair. That means top-load agitator machines, high-efficiency top loaders and front-load washers that won't drain, won't spin, leak onto the floor, lock the door shut or flash an error code mid-cycle.
Most washers never need a technician in their first few years. Consumer Reports' 2025 member survey found that only 13 percent broke down during years two through five of ownership. When one does quit, the problem is usually mechanical and specific, and the symptom tells you a lot about which part to suspect. The table below is the fastest way to narrow it down before you call.
Diagnose
Washer Symptoms and the Part Usually Behind Them
The middle column lists checks a homeowner can make safely. Unplug the washer before touching anything inside the cabinet.
| Symptom | Check first | Usual cause |
|---|---|---|
| Water left in the drum after the cycle | Straighten the drain hose behind the machine. On a front loader, open the pump filter door at the lower front. | Clogged pump filter, a kinked hose, a sock or coin in the pump, or a failed drain pump. |
| Fills and washes, but never spins | Look for standing water first. A washer that cannot drain will not start the spin. | A drain fault in most cases. With an empty tub: worn belt, motor coupler, or a lid switch or door lock that is not registering. |
| Puddle under the front of a front loader | Run a finger around the rubber door boot for tears, trapped hair or hardened detergent. | Torn or dirty door boot, a loose pump filter cap, or a split hose inside the cabinet. |
| Shakes hard or walks across the floor on spin | Redistribute the load and make sure all four feet sit flat on the floor. | Unbalanced load, uneven feet, or worn suspension rods (top load) and shock absorbers (front load). |
| Loud roar or grinding that rises with spin speed | Spin the empty drum by hand and listen for a rumble or feel for play. | Worn tub bearings, often after a failed seal let water reach them. A big job on a front loader. |
| Slow fill or no water at all | Open both supply valves fully and check the hoses for kinks. Samsung shows this as 4C or 4E. | Blocked inlet screens, a failed water inlet valve or low household water pressure. |
| Door stays locked after the cycle ends | Wait a few minutes, then check for water still in the drum. | Water the machine has not drained, or a failed door lock assembly. |
| Musty smell from a front loader | Wipe the door boot folds and run the tub-clean cycle with the door left open afterward. | Detergent residue and moisture trapped in the boot and drain path. Consumer Reports members report odor most on front loaders. |
Won't drain
Washer Not Draining? What to Check Before You Call
A washer that won't drain often looks like a different fault. Samsung's support page puts it plainly: before a washer spins, it tries to drain, and if it can't drain it never gets to the spin step. So "won't spin" and "won't drain" are frequently the same repair.
Where the drain hose sits matters
Manufacturers don't agree on the numbers, which is why the manual for your model is worth finding. Whirlpool says the top of the standpipe should be between 30 and 96 inches off the floor, and the hose shouldn't reach more than 4.5 inches into it. Samsung's guidance for its washers is 6 to 8 inches of hose in the pipe. Both warn against taping the hose into the standpipe. Without an air gap, water can siphon back into the drum as it fills.
Suds can stop a pump
Whirlpool notes that too much detergent creates enough suds to keep the washer from pumping water out and spinning. The same excess causes longer cycles and poor rinsing. If you see foam behind the door glass, run a rinse with no detergent before assuming a part has failed.
The pump filter on a front loader
LG recommends cleaning the drain pump filter monthly and points to it first when a slow drain or an OE code shows up. The filter traps buttons, coins and lint before they reach the pump. If it's clean and the hose is clear, the pump motor itself is the usual suspect.
Before you open the filter door
Everything left in the drum will come out through that small opening. Samsung's instructions start with a towel on the floor and a shallow pan, then draining the short emergency hose before unscrewing the filter counterclockwise.
If the last cycle was hot, let the water cool first.
- Straighten the drain hose and look for a kink behind the machine.
- Check the standpipe height and the depth of hose inside it.
- Clean the pump filter on a front loader, or check the manual for its location.
- Run a rinse-only cycle if suds are visible.
Machine type
Top-Load and Front-Load Washers Fail in Different Places
Top loaders: agitator and high-efficiency
Top loaders have a lid switch that stops the spin when the lid is open. When that switch or its strike wears, the washer fills and agitates but won't spin, even though the drain works. Suspension rods and a worn drive belt or motor coupler are the other common mechanical repairs.
Consumer Reports members most often report tangled clothes on top loaders, both agitator and HE models. High-efficiency top loaders also draw complaints about clothes not coming out clean. Neither is always a broken part; load size and detergent dose account for much of it.
Front loaders: door boot, lock and bearings
A front loader seals water in with a rubber door boot and holds the door shut with an electric lock. Both see heavy wear. A boot that tears leaks at the front, and a lock that fails leaves the washer refusing to start or refusing to open.
The expensive failure is the tub bearing. Consumer Reports' laundry expert notes that replacing a front-load drum bearing means taking the whole machine apart, which is why the repair price often lands near the cost of a new washer. Consumer Reports' 2024 survey also shows front loaders costing more to fix than top-load agitator models.
Error codes
Reading a Washer Error Code Before You Call
A code on the display narrows the search more than any description of the noise. Write it down exactly as shown, including whether it's a letter C or E, and read it to the repair company when you call. The same code can point to a cheap fix or an expensive part, but it tells the technician which parts to bring.
Samsung washers are the most common source of code questions, and the Samsung washer error code library goes through each one with what you can reset yourself. LG front loaders use OE for a drain fault, which LG ties first to the pump filter. Whirlpool and Maytag machines have their own sets, usually printed inside the lid or in the tech sheet behind the control panel.
Samsung treats a few codes as normal events rather than faults. Over-sudsing clears on its own, and an unbalanced load code goes away once the laundry is untangled and spread out. If a drain, fill or leak code comes back after the checks on this page, that is the point to book a service call.
Local water
What Sacramento Water Does to a Washer
Some repair sites blame "Sacramento's hard water" for most washer failures. The City of Sacramento's own numbers tell a more mixed story. About 80 percent of the city's supply comes from the American and Sacramento rivers, and the American River treatment plant delivers water at 34 mg/L of hardness. The U.S. Geological Survey classes anything from 0 to 60 mg/L as soft.
The picture changes with the source. Water from the Sacramento River plant tested at 63 mg/L, barely into the moderately hard range, and the city's groundwater wells ranged from 15 to 154 mg/L. The city's printed system average was 83 mg/L, or 4.9 grains per gallon. Which mix reaches your tap depends on where you are in the city, so two neighborhoods can see different results from the same washer.
Soft water means less detergent
GE's detergent guidance points out that soft water may need as little as a quarter cup of detergent in a top loader, and that more can cause suds to overflow. For HE machines the dose is smaller still. In soft water, extra detergent is the thing to watch. Whirlpool links it to oversudsing and poor rinsing, and Samsung's Sud code exists for the same reason.
Folsom draws all of its drinking water from Folsom Lake, and other districts around Roseville and the county blend surface and well water in different amounts. Your water utility's annual Consumer Confidence Report lists the hardness for your area.
Costs
Washer Repair Costs and the Service Charge
These are national figures. No survey of Sacramento repair prices exists, so use them to judge whether a written estimate is in a normal range.
| Washer type or charge | Typical figure | What moves the price |
|---|---|---|
| Top-load agitator washer | $123 to $175 | Lid switches, belts and couplers are inexpensive parts. |
| Top-load HE washer | $142 to $213 | Electronic controls cost more than belts and switches. |
| Front-load washer | $158 to $214 | Pumps and door locks sit low; bearings and boards push it well past this. |
| Compact washer | About $186 | Parts are model-specific and may need ordering. |
| Service charge before the repair | $100 to $150 and up | Ask whether it is credited toward the repair if you go ahead. |
| Washer or dryer repair, national range | $100 to $650 | Wide because it includes both machines and every part. |
California gives you two useful protections on a washer repair. Before any work starts, the repair company owes you a written estimate covering parts and labor. And under the Business and Professions Code, the parts it replaces are returned to you, apart from a few exceptions such as parts sent back under warranty. Asking for the old pump or door lock is a simple way to see what you paid for. The invoice also has to note any used or rebuilt parts.
Before you book, you can confirm a company's state registration on the Bureau of Household Goods and Services lookup. For how fees stack up across every appliance, see the appliance repair cost guide.
Repair or replace
Is It Worth Repairing a 10-Year-Old Washer?
It depends on which part failed. Consumer Reports says a washer's life expectancy is close to 10 years on average, and a 2007 National Association of Home Builders study of first-owner use listed washers at 10 years as well. So a 10-year-old washer isn't finished, but it's near the point where one big repair can cost more than the machine is worth.
Consumer Reports has long advised against spending more than 50 percent of the cost of a new product on repairing an old one. Its own washer example shows how use changes the answer. A $650 washer bought seven years ago and run seven loads a week is a candidate for replacement. A three-year-old machine that cost $1,000 is usually worth fixing.
Usually worth repairing at 10 years
- Drain pump, pump filter housing or drain hose
- Lid switch or door lock assembly
- Water inlet valve on a slow or no-fill washer
- Drive belt or motor coupler on a top loader
Often a reason to replace
- Front-load tub bearings with a roar on spin
- Cracked outer tub or broken spider arm
- Main control board on a lower-priced model
- A second major repair within a year
If you do replace, check the rebate first. SMUD's appliance rebate page lists a $100 instant rebate on ENERGY STAR clothes washers bought at The Home Depot and RC Willey stores in SMUD territory. Roseville homes on Roseville Electric aren't SMUD customers. According to the Department of Energy figures Consumer Reports cites, new washers use 70 percent less energy than they did in 1990. The repair or replace guide covers lifespans and rebates in more depth.
Brands and areas
Washer Brands and Where Calls Are Covered
Callers most often ask about these washer brands. Tell us the brand when you call, and whether it's a top loader, a front loader or a stacked washer and dryer, so the call goes to a company that works on that design.
Check the warranty before you pay for anything. Consumer Reports notes that most washer warranties last one year, though Speed Queen offers up to seven years on some models, and a repair under the manufacturer's warranty is booked through the brand.
Coverage runs by ZIP code. In Roseville that includes 95661, 95678 and 95747, and there's more on appliance repair in Roseville. Coverage in Sacramento includes the central and northern ZIPs, such as 95818, 95819 and the Natomas ZIPs, but not south Sacramento ZIPs like 95823 or 95831. The service area page has the full ZIP list.
If the dryer next to your washer is also misbehaving, the dryer repair page covers heat and vent problems.
Questions
Washer Repair Questions
Is it worth repairing a 10-year-old washer?
Sometimes. Consumer Reports puts a washer's life expectancy close to 10 years, and a 2007 National Association of Home Builders study also listed 10. At that age a drain pump, lid switch or inlet valve can still be worth fixing, while a front-load drum bearing or a control board usually isn't. Consumer Reports advises against spending more than half the price of a new washer on a repair. The repair or replace guide walks through the math.
Why does my washer stop before the spin cycle?
In most cases the washer couldn't drain. Samsung explains that a washer tries to drain before it spins, and if it can't drain it never moves on to the spin step. Check the drain hose for kinks, clean the pump filter on a front loader, and look for heavy suds. If the tub is empty and it still won't spin, the motor, belt or lid switch needs a technician.
How much does washer repair cost in Sacramento?
No Sacramento-only survey exists. Consumer Reports' 2024 member survey found median repair bills of $123 to $175 for top-load agitator washers and $158 to $214 for front loaders, before the service charge. A Baltimore repair shop owner quoted in the same article puts that charge at $100 to $150 or more. The Sacramento repair cost guide covers how those fees combine.
Does a top-load washer have a drain pump filter?
Often not one you can reach. LG says its drain pump filter is only on front-load washers and washer-dryer combos, not on its top loaders. Other brands vary, so check the manual. If a top loader holds water, a kinked drain hose or a sock caught in the pump is more likely, and reaching the pump usually means tipping or opening the cabinet.
What does Sud or Sd mean on a Samsung washer?
Samsung's code list says the washer has detected over-sudsing, which comes from using the wrong detergent or too much of it. The cycle resumes on its own once the suds break down, and Samsung says no service is needed. If it keeps happening, switch to an HE detergent and cut the dose. The Samsung washer error code library covers the rest of the codes.
