Should You Repair or Replace Your Refrigerator?
Weigh the repair quote against the fridge’s age, running cost and local rebates. If repair wins, one call gets a technician booked for your brand.
Repair a refrigerator when it's under about 10 years old and the quote is less than half the price of a comparable new model. Replace it when a sealed-system failure hits an older fridge, or when the repairs keep coming. Consumer Reports' research backs both lines, and the rest of this guide shows you how to check your own numbers.

The repair-or-replace question comes up on a lot of those calls, usually when a fridge has stopped cooling and the owner is staring at a first quote.
A few pieces of the answer are local. Your electric utility decides which rebates you can use (SMUD in most of Sacramento County, Roseville Electric inside Roseville). The City and County of Sacramento each run their own pickup programs for the old fridge. Those are covered below, after the math.
The math
The 50% Rule for Refrigerators, and Where It Comes From
The rule is simple: don't spend more than 50 percent of the cost of a new product on repairing an old one. Consumer Reports put it in exactly those words in a January 2014 press release, and said much the same in 2011.
You'll often see a second condition attached, something like "and the appliance is more than halfway through its life." That version circulates on repair and home-warranty blogs. We couldn't find it on Consumer Reports' site, so treat it as a common add-on, not the source's advice. Age still matters, though, and Consumer Reports' own refrigerator research says a fridge under 10 years old is usually more economical to fix.
Run it on your own quote
Price the replacement you'd buy: same configuration, similar size, similar features. A French-door fridge isn't replaced by a basic top-freezer in most kitchens. Halve that price. If the written estimate is below the line and the fridge is under 10, repair is the easy call. Above the line, or on a fridge well past 10, lean toward replacing.
Worked example (hypothetical)
A comparable French-door fridge is $2,000 at the store, so the 50% line sits at $1,000.
A $260 quote for a failed evaporator fan motor on a seven-year-old fridge clears it easily. Repair.
A $900 compressor job on a 14-year-old fridge technically squeaks under, but the age and the size of the repair both point the other way. Most owners replace.
Lifespans
How Long Refrigerators Last
There's no recent lifespan study for refrigerators. The figures still quoted everywhere come from a 2007 National Association of Home Builders study, based on a 2006 survey of manufacturers, trade associations and researchers. They're dated, and the study itself says they are a general guideline only. Consumer Reports' more recent reporting is a useful cross-check.

Consumer Reports also found in a 2021 member survey that 37 percent of refrigerators bought between 2011 and 2021 broke or stopped working as well as they should have. So a fridge that fails at seven or eight years isn't unusual, and it's squarely in the range where repair tends to pay.

The expensive exception
Sealed-System Repairs: Compressors and Refrigerant Leaks
The sealed system is the closed loop that makes the cold: the compressor, the condenser and evaporator coils, and the tubing that carries refrigerant between them. When a fault is inside that loop, the job becomes refrigerant recovery, part replacement, brazing, evacuation and recharge. Consumer Reports members paid a median of about $562 for compressor repairs, more than double the common-repair medians.
Refrigerant work is regulated. Under EPA Section 608 rules, anyone who attaches gauges to a system, adds refrigerant or removes it must hold a Section 608 technician credential. Ask whether the company you're booking handles sealed-system work before the visit.
Many fridges that seem to be dying have a far cheaper fault. This table shows how a technician tends to tell them apart.

Sacramento summers add stress. The region averages roughly 14 to 23 days a year at 100°F or hotter, depending on the NOAA station, and GE Appliances advises against installing a refrigerator where temperatures exceed 110°F. A fridge in a hot garage runs longer and harder, which is worth weighing if it's the one that failed.
Running cost
What an Older Refrigerator Costs to Run
Energy savings alone rarely justify a new primary fridge. ENERGY STAR puts the gain from swapping an old fridge for an ENERGY STAR model at about $150 across 12 years, which is small next to the price of the fridge. ENERGY STAR models run about 9 percent more efficiently than the federal minimum.
The second fridge is where the numbers move. ENERGY STAR's 2024 fact sheet says an extra fridge in a garage or basement can waste about $90 a year. If a broken garage fridge is mostly holding drinks, not repairing it may be the cheapest option of all.
Federal rules are tightening too. The U.S. Department of Energy's refrigeration products page lists new efficiency standards with compliance dates of January 31, 2029 or January 31, 2030, depending on product class. That affects which models stores stock later, not the fridge you own now.

Refrigerator Rebates for Sacramento and Roseville Households

SMUD customers
SMUD's appliance rebate page lists a $50 instant rebate on select ENERGY STAR top-freezer refrigerators, taken at the register at The Home Depot, RC Willey and Valley Oak Home Appliance Center in SMUD territory. French-door and side-by-side models aren't on the list. SMUD's refrigerator recycling program has ended; the utility now points residents to City and County pickup.
PG&E customers on income-qualified programs
PG&E's Energy Savings Assistance Program can replace a refrigerator at no cost to income-qualified customers. The fridge has to be at least 15 years old and the home at least five years old. Some households pair PG&E gas with SMUD electricity (Citrus Heights lists that split, for example), so ask PG&E directly whether your account qualifies for a fridge swap.
Roseville Electric customers
Roseville Electric runs its own rebates for city residents. We couldn't confirm a current refrigerator offer on its site, so check with the utility before you shop, or search your ZIP code on the ENERGY STAR rebate finder on the refrigerator page.
Statewide and federal programs
TECH Clean California and the state's HEEHRA rebates focus on heat pumps, induction ranges and heat pump dryers, not refrigerators. The California Energy Commission reported single-family HEEHRA funds fully reserved as of February 24, 2026. The federal 25C home improvement credit ended for anything placed in service after December 31, 2025.
The old fridge
Getting Rid of an Old Refrigerator in Sacramento
A household refrigerator goes to the scrap yard with its refrigerant still inside, so federal rules put the burden on the last stop. Under EPA safe disposal requirements, the final person in the disposal chain, such as a scrap metal recycler, must make sure the refrigerant is recovered first. That's why you shouldn't cut lines or drain anything yourself, and why the routes below are the sensible ones.
- City of Sacramento garbage customers: two appliance and e-waste appointments per calendar year, up to two appliances each, at no charge. Request it online through 311, in the Sac311 app or by calling 311. Clear out all food first. City program details.
- Unincorporated Sacramento County: add the fridge to your bulky waste appointment, tape or tie the doors shut, and set it to one side of the pile. Residents can also drop large appliances at Kiefer Landfill or the North Area Recovery Station. County bulky waste details.
- Retailer haul-away: ENERGY STAR notes that many appliance retailers will pick up and recycle the old fridge when you buy a new one. Ask when you order.
- Roseville and Placer County: ask your garbage service about bulky item and appliance pickup. The rules differ from Sacramento County’s.

Is it worth repairing a 10-year-old refrigerator?
Often, yes. Consumer Reports says it frequently makes economic sense to repair a fridge even as far as 10 years into ownership. Keep the repair under half the price of a comparable new model. The exception is a sealed-system failure, like a dead compressor or refrigerant leak, which usually tips an older fridge toward replacement.
