Soft water is easy on dishwasher heating elements and washer valves, since there's little mineral scale to build up. The catch is detergent. GE Appliances notes that soft water needs less dishwasher detergent, and that too much of it can etch glassware permanently. Pods and tablets deliver a fixed dose, so a household seeing cloudy glasses may do better with powder or gel measured to a partial cup.

If spots or residue persist on a correct dose, the problem is more likely in the machine: a clogged filter, a weak circulation pump or a spray arm that isn't turning. That's a job for dishwasher repair.
