Refrigerator Not Cooling but the Freezer Is Cold
Most frost-free refrigerators have one cooling coil, the evaporator, and it sits behind the freezer's back panel. A small evaporator fan pulls air across that coil and blows some of it through a duct into the fresh-food section. So when the fridge side warms up and the freezer doesn't, the refrigerant is usually doing its job. The cold air just isn't reaching the fridge.
What you can check in ten minutes
Open the freezer and find the vents on the back wall and the one that feeds the fridge side. GE warns that large containers at the back can block the flow of cold air, and a bag of frozen peas against a vent is enough. Move things away, then hold the freezer door switch down with the door open and listen. You should hear the fan running. If the vents are clear and the fan is silent, or you can see a white wall of frost behind the panel, the next step belongs to a technician.
What the technician looks at
The usual suspects are the evaporator fan motor, the defrost system (heater, sensor or control) that is supposed to melt frost off the coil on a schedule, and the damper or thermistor that meters air into the fridge. A frozen-solid coil points to defrost trouble. A clean coil with a still fan points to the motor or its control.

How Long the Food Lasts in a Broken Fridge
The closest official yardstick is the USDA's power-outage guidance. A refrigerator keeps food safe for up to 4 hours with the door closed. A full freezer holds a safe temperature for about 48 hours, and roughly half that if it's only half full. Once perishables such as meat, fish, eggs and leftovers have spent more than 4 hours above 40°F, the advice is to throw them out rather than taste-test them.
A fridge that is dying slowly is harder to judge than one that quit overnight, because it may have been sitting at 45°F for days. That's why a thermometer reading matters more than how the milk smells. Details are on FoodSafety.gov's power outage chart.
- Keep both doors shut. Every opening lets warm air in.
- If the freezer still works, move milk and meat into a cooler with ice, kept at 40°F or colder.
- Clear the back of the fridge so the technician can pull it out and reach the coils.

A refrigerator works by moving heat out of the box and dumping it into the room, so a hot room makes that job harder. GE is specific about the limits. It does not recommend installing a standard refrigerator where the temperature falls below 60°F or rises above 110°F, and it warns that above 110°F the oil in the sealed system can overheat and break down. Its Garage Ready top-freezer models are rated from 38°F to 110°F. The cold end matters here too: when a garage drops toward 40°F on a January night, a standard fridge's thermostat may sense cool air and run less, and the freezer section can start to thaw.

ENERGY STAR estimates that a second refrigerator in a garage or basement could be wasting about $90 a year. If the spare is an old unit with a failing compressor, that is part of the math when an estimate comes in. How the estimate has to work in California
State regulations say the written estimate must cover all parts, labor and the initial service call, and it can't be written as a "minimum" figure that grows later. If the technician opens the panel and finds a second failed part, the dealer needs your consent before going over the estimate, and when that consent is given by phone the invoice has to record who approved it, when, and the added cost.

When a Refrigerator Is Worth Fixing, and When It Isn't
Age and price paid decide most of these calls. Consumer Reports' research shows that a refrigerator under 10 years old is usually cheaper to fix, and that manufacturers build most fridges to last about 10 years. Its two exceptions are budget top-freezers and side-by-sides, where a new unit can cost little more than a major repair. A 2007 National Association of Home Builders study put the typical life of a standard refrigerator at about 13 years, a compact fridge at 9 and a freezer at 11, based on first-owner use.
Energy use is the other half. ENERGY STAR says an old refrigerator uses about 20% more energy than a new ENERGY STAR model, which it values at around $160 over a 12-year life. That is real money but rarely enough on its own to justify replacing a fridge that only needs a $200 fan motor.

Most calls involve the big mainstream brands, and the fault patterns follow the design more than the badge. Many French-door models, Samsung's among them, put the ice maker up in the fresh-food compartment, which runs a water line and a freezing mold through a space that is supposed to stay above freezing. A plain top-freezer has far fewer parts to fail, and Consumer Reports counts its optional ice maker among the parts owners can swap themselves.

Getting Rid of a Refrigerator You Won't Repair
Refrigerators and freezers hold refrigerant, and federal rules make the last stop in the disposal chain, usually a scrap recycler or landfill, responsible for making sure it was recovered first. That's why many yards ask for a signed statement saying who removed the refrigerant and when, and why a fridge can't just go out with the trash.
SMUD's refrigerator recycling program has ended. City of Sacramento residential customers can book two collection appointments a year through 311 or the Sac 311 app for large appliances, refrigerators and freezers included. The unit goes at the end of the driveway, visible, with about two feet of clearance, no earlier than a day before pickup. Outside the city limits, check with your county or city waste service, or ask whoever delivers a new fridge whether haul-away is included.

In most frost-free models the fresh-food section gets its cold air from the freezer side, pushed by the evaporator fan. If that fan stops, the coil frosts over, or a vent is blocked, the freezer stays cold while the fridge warms up. Clear the vents first, then listen for the fan with the freezer door open. Silence usually means a service call.
How long does a new or repaired refrigerator take to get cold?
GE tells owners of a newly installed refrigerator to allow about a day for it to cool down and stabilize, and a fridge that sat warm for a while needs time to pull its contents back down too. Put a thermometer in a glass of water on the middle shelf and read it the next morning. You want 40°F or lower in the fridge and 0°F in the freezer.
Is it worth fixing a 10-year-old refrigerator?
