If You Smell Gas Near the Range
A rotten-egg smell around a gas range is a safety problem first and a repair second. PG&E's guidance is to leave the area now, get everyone else out with you, and avoid matches, light switches and anything else that could spark. Once you're outside, call 911, then call PG&E at 1-800-743-5000. Sacramento County's economic development office lists PG&E as the county's natural gas utility; SMUD supplies electricity only.
Don't hunt for the leak with a flashlight, and don't try to relight a burner that went out. A repair company can replace a gas valve, igniter or regulator after the utility has made the house safe. If your home runs on propane, call your propane supplier instead of PG&E.

Why Gas and Electric Ovens Break Differently
Gas ovens: the igniter does two jobs
Most modern gas ranges light the oven with a glow-bar igniter; GE still publishes separate help for older standing-pilot models. The igniter heats until it glows, and in most designs the safety valve only opens once enough current flows through it. As the igniter ages, it keeps glowing but draws less current, so the valve stays shut. That's why "it glows but won't light" is the single most common gas oven complaint, and why the fix is usually a new igniter rather than a valve.
Consumer Reports lists igniter replacement among the range repairs some owners handle themselves. The catch is that the job means disconnecting a gas appliance and working near the valve, so many people hand it to a technician who can leak-test the connections afterward.
Electric ovens: elements, sensors and the board
An electric oven has a bake element on the floor, a broil element at the top, and a temperature sensor on the back wall that tells the control board when to switch them. Elements tend to fail visibly. Sensors fail quietly, and the oven starts running hot or cold. Consumer Reports' survey data shows electric ranges cost a little more to fix than gas ones, and failures inside the oven or the control panel are the ones it recommends leaving to a professional.
Self-clean
When the Self-Clean Cycle Causes the Problem
High-temperature self-clean burns food residue down to ash, and Whirlpool notes the door locks about six seconds after the cycle starts and stays locked until the oven has cooled. Locked doors and control errors right after a cycle are common enough that Whirlpool and GE both publish reset steps for them. If your range worked in the morning and shows an error after a self-clean, the door lock or the control is the first suspect.
Before you call, try the reset the manufacturers describe. If a power outage interrupted the cycle, turn the range's breaker off for one minute and back on. Give the oven time to cool; Whirlpool's cycle times already include a 30 minute cool-down, and a door started by mistake will not open until the oven drops to about 200 degrees Fahrenheit.
Before the next self-clean
Take out the racks, the broiler pan and any foil, and keep the kitchen ventilated. Whirlpool warns that the fumes can kill pet birds, so move them to a closed, well-ventilated room for the whole cycle. If a technician is due soon, skip the cycle; a locked door slows the diagnosis.

Repair the Range, or Replace It With Induction?
Ranges outlast most kitchen appliances. The 2007 NAHB study of home component life put gas ranges at about 15 years and electric ranges at about 13, well ahead of dishwashers and microwaves. Consumer Reports' own analysis leans toward repairing a range in most cases, with one caveat. A $212 repair on an $800 electric range stops making sense after a few years, while the same bill on a $1,250 model is usually worth paying for a decade.
The local twist is the SMUD rebate. If your gas range needs a valve or board and it is already in its second decade, a $750 rebate for switching to induction changes the math. The rebate is for SMUD electric customers, and the new unit has to be at least 24 inches wide. You also need a before photo of the old gas range in place, so take it before anything is hauled away. Budget for the electrical side too, because an induction range generally needs a 240-volt circuit that a gas range never used.
