Why Water Stays in the Bottom of the Tub
A dishwasher drains through a short chain of parts, and a blockage anywhere along it leaves water behind. Start inside the machine and work toward the sink.
The filter and sump
GE tells owners to remove the fine and ultra fine filters and check the sump for paper, labels, noodles, lettuce or bones. Consumer Reports suggests cleaning the filter by hand about once a month; gritty dishes are the usual sign it's overdue.
The disposal and air gap
In many kitchens the dishwasher drains into the garbage disposal. A full disposal backs water up the hose, so run it first. If the counter has a small chrome cap beside the faucet, that's an air gap; GE says to pull the cap and clean out debris. The hose and pump
Without an air gap, GE says the drain hose must rise in a high loop under the counter. A hose that sags, or is crushed behind the machine, lets dirty water run back into the tub. When all of that checks out and the tub still holds water, the drain pump itself is the likely failure, and that's a part to leave to a technician.

About 80% of the City of Sacramento's water comes from the American and Sacramento rivers, and river water here is soft or only just moderately hard. The other 20% comes from wells, and those vary a lot: the hardest City well water reaches 154 mg/L, which the U.S. Geological Survey classes as hard. Dishwasher Error Codes and When a Reset Helps
Every brand uses its own codes, and the same letters can mean different things on two models from one maker. Write the code down before you do anything else, because a power reset can clear it from the display. These examples come from GE's published list for some of its dishwashers:
- C1: the pump-out during drain took longer than 2 minutes. GE suggests cleaning the air gap and running the disposal.
- C3: the dishwasher won't drain. GE's fix is to switch the power off at the circuit breaker for about 30 seconds, then reset.
- C6: the incoming water temperature is too low; it should reach at least 120°F.
- C8: the detergent cup is blocked from opening fully. Check that nothing tall sits in front of it.
- H2O: a low water condition. Make sure the supply valve under the sink is fully open.
GE notes that cutting power for a minute or two clears some fault codes. If the same code returns on the next cycle, the fault is real and a reset won't fix it. If the invoice doesn't say what is and isn't covered, state rules treat the repair as carrying 30 days on labor and 90 days on parts. - Check the manufacturer warranty first. Many dishwashers carry at least one year of coverage from the purchase date.
- Replace when the estimate passes half the price of a comparable new dishwasher, especially past the 8 or 9 year mark.
- Replace when the tub itself is cracked or rusted through. No seal or clamp fixes a leak in the tub.
