Two Faults You Should Not Work On Yourself
A microwave stays dangerous after you unplug it
The high-voltage capacitor inside a microwave's cabinet keeps its charge long after the plug is pulled. Consumer Reports warns it can hold thousands of volts for hours or even days, and notes the Consumer Product Safety Commission has recorded electrocution deaths from home repair attempts. Changing a bulb, a turntable roller or a grease filter from the outside is fine. Removing the outer cover is not.
A gas cooktop that smells of gas
Treat a gas odor as an emergency, not a repair ticket. Get everyone outside without touching switches, then call 911 and PG&E at 1-800-743-5000, which is the natural gas utility for Sacramento County. PG&E's gas leak steps list what to avoid on the way out.
- Never run a microwave with the door bent, the seal damaged or the latch loose.
- Stop using a microwave if there is a hole in the cavity wall or the interior coating is actively peeling. GE says neither can be repaired.
- Keep liquids off a cracked glass top; switch the breaker off if it could get wet.
- Don't relight a gas burner that blew out until the gas has had time to clear, as PG&E advises.

Gas Burner and Glass Cooktop Problems
Gas burners: clicking, slow lighting, no spark
Most ignition trouble on a gas cooktop starts after a spill or a cleaning. GE traces it to water or food blocking the burner head's ignition port, a burner cap that isn't seated on its matching head, or an electrode pushed up out of place. Dry the parts in a warm oven for about half an hour, reseat each cap, and try again.
If every burner clicks at once and won't stop, the problem usually sits in a shared part: the spark module or a switch behind one knob. A burner that never clicks at all while the others do points to its own switch or electrode wire.
Consumer Reports' member surveys found ignition problems were fixed on the first visit about 72 percent of the time, so a second trip for a part is not unusual.
Radiant glass: cracks and elements stuck on high
A smooth radiant top has coiled elements under ceramic glass, each run by an infinite switch or a touch control. An element that won't heat usually has a broken coil or a failed switch. One that stays on high after you turn it down has a switch with welded contacts, which needs attention soon because the burner can't be controlled.
Cracked glass is its own category. The whole top is replaced as one panel, and the price depends on the brand, whether the glass is still made and whether the touch controls are part of the glass assembly. Get the model number to the repair company before the visit so they can check the panel is still available.
Induction
Induction Cooktop Faults and Pan Compatibility
- A fridge magnet sticks firmly to the base of the pan.
- The pan is flat and fully touches the glass.
- It covers the minimum size marked for that burner and sits centered in the ring.
- Cast iron, enameled cast iron, carbon steel and magnetic stainless all qualify.
Most induction "failures" are pans. The burner heats the pan directly through a magnetic field, so it needs iron in the base. GE lists aluminum, copper, glass, ceramic and some stainless steel as cookware that won't work, and says a burner without a usable pan flashes its power level for 25 seconds, then shuts off. Lifting the pan for more than 30 seconds also turns the burner off.
When a pan that passes the magnet test still won't heat, the fault is real. Check the breaker first. GE also notes that where the supply is lower, such as 208 volts, you may need a lid on the pan to reach full heat. Past that, the usual suspects are the induction generator (power) board, a cooling fan, or the touch control. Induction parts are expensive, which is why Consumer Reports' median induction repair is more than triple a gas one.

Microwaves
Over-the-Range and Built-In Microwave Repair
Microwave repair makes sense for the models that are hard to replace. An over-the-range unit doubles as the range hood, bolts to the wall and upper cabinet, and may be ducted outdoors. A built-in model sits in a trim kit sized for one opening. Consumer Reports puts basic installation of a replacement over-the-range microwave at $100 to $200, and hundreds more if the new one needs electrical, venting or cabinet changes.

Consumer Reports' advice differs by type. It says it always makes sense to repair an expensive cooktop, and leans toward fixing gas models, while a cheap electric cooktop with a costly fault is often better replaced. For over-the-range microwaves priced at $300 or less, it recommends repair in the first three years and says to consider it at four to six. Is a countertop microwave worth repairing?
Rarely. Consumer Reports prices small countertop models from about $60 and most midsized ones between $100 and $500, and national repair figures run from $50 to $400. Once a service charge is added, most repairs pass the point where Consumer Reports advises replacing: more than half the price of a new one. Built-in and over-the-range models are a different story because installation adds to the replacement cost.
Why does my induction burner flash and then shut off?
On GE induction cooktops, a flashing power level means the burner can't detect a usable pan. It flashes for 25 seconds, then turns off. Test the pan with a magnet: if it doesn't stick firmly to the base, the pan won't work. Also center it inside the ring and check it meets the minimum size for that burner. If a magnetic pan still flashes, the burner needs service.
Can I keep cooking on a glass cooktop with a small crack?
No. GE does not recommend using a cracked cooktop until it is repaired, and on a range it also advises against using the oven, because the oven vents onto the cooktop surface. Consumer Reports lists cracked glass among repairs to leave to a technician because of the shock risk. Switch the unit off at the breaker if spills could reach the crack.
Why do my gas burners keep clicking after I clean the stove?
Water in the burner head or ignition port is the usual reason. GE suggests drying the burner parts in a warm oven for about 30 minutes, then checking that each cap sits flat on the matching burner head. GE also notes a healthy burner may take up to 10 or 12 clicks to light. Constant clicking with dry, seated parts points to the spark switch or module.
Do I get the old parts back after a repair?
In California, yes, with exceptions. Business and Professions Code 9843 requires replaced parts to be returned to you. The exceptions are parts sent back to the manufacturer under warranty and a few the state exempts, such as parts that are unsafe to handle or rebuilt on an exchange basis. Used parts installed in your appliance must be identified on the invoice.
