The fix and the cost are far apart, so it's worth knowing which one you have.
No heat
Dryer Not Heating: Gas and Electric Causes
Run the dryer empty on a timed high-heat setting for five minutes, then open the door. Maytag suggests this simple test. If the drum is cold, the dryer isn't producing heat. If it's warm but loads still come out damp, skip ahead to the vent section, because heat is being made and trapped.
Electric dryers
An electric dryer needs a 240-volt supply on its own 30-amp circuit, fused on both sides of the line. Whirlpool and Maytag explain that this means two breakers: one runs the motor that turns the drum and the other runs the heating element. When only one trips, the drum turns but nothing heats. Flip the double breaker fully off and back on before anything else.
If power is fine, the usual failed parts are the heating element, which can break open like a light bulb filament, and the thermal fuse. The fuse is a one-time safety device that blows when the dryer overheats. A blown fuse on a dryer with a clogged vent will blow again, so a good technician checks the airflow before replacing it.
Gas dryers
A gas dryer turns without heating when the gas shutoff valve is closed. The valve is open when its handle lies parallel to the gas pipe. That's worth checking after a move or after someone has pulled the dryer out to clean behind it.
Past the valve, the burner has an igniter that glows to light the gas and gas valve coils that open to let gas through. A cracked igniter gives no glow at all. Weak coils let the igniter glow, then the flame fails to catch or goes out after a few seconds. Both are common gas dryer repairs, and both mean working on the gas connection, so the job should end with a leak test.
One more thing to rule out on either type: the Air Only or Air Fluff setting. Whirlpool's help pages note that these cycles never add heat at any point, and they're easy to select by accident on a dial.
Vent and fire safety
Dryer Vent Cleaning, Long Dry Times and Fire Risk
A dryer that heats but still takes forever usually has a vent problem. Whirlpool's venting guide says it directly: if a dryer is heating but still has long dry times, the likely cause is the vent or restricted airflow. Trapped heat also trips the dryer's high-limit safety parts, which is how a clogged vent turns into a no-heat repair.
There's a safety reason to deal with it quickly. The U.S. Fire Administration found that failure to clean, at 31 percent, was the leading factor in home clothes dryer fires from 2018 to 2020.
What a correct vent looks like
Whirlpool's venting specifications call for 4-inch heavy metal vent, rigid or flexible metal, and warn that foil and plastic vent can collapse or be crushed. Consumer Reports gives the same advice: replace vinyl or foil ducts with metal. Keep the run as short and straight as possible, since length and elbows reduce airflow and collect lint. The outside hood should sit at least 12 inches above the ground and clear of bushes or rocks.
Some Samsung dryers can test their own vent. After the test, C80 means about 80 percent of the vent is clogged and C90 means more than 90 percent, and heat codes such as HC or tS usually trace back to the same lint.
Clean these, in this order
The lint screen after every load, including the slot it slides into. Then the short duct behind the dryer. Then the full run to the outside, every one to two years, which is Whirlpool's and Maytag's interval.

PG&E Gas, SMUD and Roseville Electric: What Changes for Your Dryer
Sacramento County's economic development office lists SMUD as the county's electric provider and PG&E as its natural gas utility. That split matters for a gas dryer. A repair company can replace an igniter or gas valve coils, but a suspected leak in the line is PG&E's first. If you smell rotten eggs near the dryer, PG&E says to get everyone out, avoid anything that could spark, including your phone, and call 911 and then PG&E from a safe distance.
It also matters when you're deciding whether to replace. As of September 29, 2026, SMUD's appliance rebate page listed no rebate for heat pump dryers. The state HEEHRA program lists $840 for a heat pump clothes dryer, but its single-family funds were fully reserved as of February 24, 2026. Homes in Roseville buy power from Roseville Electric, not SMUD, so check the city's current programs before counting on any rebate.
An ENERGY STAR dryer uses about 20 percent less energy than a conventional model, according to Consumer Reports, which is a modest saving on a machine that already lasts more than a decade.

Dryers are simpler than washers and tend to outlast them. A 2007 National Association of Home Builders study listed both gas and electric dryers at 13 years, against 10 for washers. Consumer Reports found that 90 percent of dryers bought between 2015 and 2025 were still in use.
So age alone rarely decides it. Consumer Reports' own examples make the point. A $600 electric dryer bought nine years ago and run seven loads a week isn't worth a $118 repair, because the money is better spent on a new, efficient model. A $2,200 dryer that's three years old is worth a $188 repair. Between those, Consumer Reports' long-standing advice applies: don't spend more than half the price of a new dryer to fix an old one.
Belts, rollers, thermal fuses, heating elements and igniters are usually worth fixing on a dryer of almost any age. Why does my dryer tumble but not heat?
The drum and the heat run on separate circuits, so one can work without the other. On an electric dryer, check that both halves of the double breaker are on. On a gas dryer, make sure the gas valve handle runs parallel to the pipe. Also confirm the cycle isn't set to Air Only.
